SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN THE TURKISH DATA PROTECTION LAW:

On 4 March 2024, the Turkish Parliament passed a new regulation which amends several regulations including the Law on the Protection of Personal Data No. 6698 ("LPPD"). This amendment is welcomed by the market as harmonisation of LPPD with the EU General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR") has long been expected.

HIGH INFLATION FORCES DATA PROTECTION BOARD TO REVISE THE REGISTRATION THRESHOLD:

The fluctuating value of the Turkish Lira and very high inflation rates in recent times has brought about the need to constantly update the financial criteria in a number of legal regulations.

TERM FOR REGISTRATION WITH DATA CONTROLLERS REGISTRY EXTENDED YET AGAIN:

The Data Protection Board has extended the term for registration with data controllers registry for all data controllers until 31.12.2021.

FINAL REMINDER FOR REGISTRATION OBLIGATIONS: DATA CONTROLLERS HAVE 20 DAYS TO REGISTER:

One of the main obligations of the data controllers under the Turkish Personal Data Protection Law is to register with a publicly available Data Controllers’ Registry through an online information system called “VERBIS”. For certain data controllers, this obligation is due by 31 December 2019.
