TURKEY’S PARTICIPATION TO BOLSTER SAFETY IN HORN OF AFRICA

Turkish Grand National Assembly has recently issued a resolution which will bolster the security for maritime transport in the regions of Horn of Africa and Gulf of Aden.

As is common knowledge, these regions are one of the hubs of piracy which adversely affects maritime transportation, especially those using the Suez Canal. The UN Security Council has adopted measures to combat piracy to ensure the safety of these regions throughout the years with Turkey, one of the main contributors. In cooperation with the UN and EU, the Turkish Navy ensured the safety of the Turkish vessels which is evidenced by the fact that no merchant vessel sailing under Turkish flag has been either abducted since March 2010 or attacked since August 2021.

However, pursuant to the request of the Somalian government, a UN Resolution was not issued in 2023 so that combatting against piracy has continued outside of the Somalian waters. The Mission of the Turkish navy in the regions of Horn of Africa and Gulf of Aden ended recently as per the resolution of the Turkish Grand National Assembly dated 02/02/2023.

As a result and in order to continue the efforts for combatting against piracy and improving the security of the maritime transportation in these regions, the Turkish Grand National Assembly issued a resolution to extend the Mission of the Turkish Navy in the Gulf of Aden and Horn of Africa for one more year. The fine details of the Mission will be later decided by the President.

This resolution is expected to bolster the stability of these regions for maritime transportation.
